Location of the colloquium

The 2nd MACSIM will take place in the Maryland Room of Marie Mount Hall, on the College Park campus of the University of Maryland. This is the same building that houses the Linguistics Department.

Travel directions to College Park, to the university, and to Marie Mount Hall are here.

Some discount bus lines stop at the Greenbelt Metro Station, northeast of College Park. This is a good place to get off, as it is just one stop away from the College Park Metro station, on the Green Line of the D.C. Metro.

Note that College Park is just outside of Washington D.C., four miles up from its northeastern border on Route 1. It is a stop on the Green Line of the D.C. Metro, a twenty minute ride from (for example) the L’Enfant Plaza station. So you may want to combine your trip here with a visit to the capital.

Parking on campus

On Saturday, parking is unrestricted in most (but not all) lots on campus (signs make it clear when this is not the case).

Reimbursements

Student presenters will be reimbursed for travel expenses, up to some amount. The amount will depend on the total demand for reimbursement, as well as other demands on our budget. Presently it seems likely that a student presenter will have access to at least these amounts: $50 for presenters from New York City, $45 for presenters from New Brunswick, $35 for presenters from Philadelphia, $30 for presenters from Newark, $25 for presenters from Baltimore. Metro fare for residents D.C. is not guaranteed.

To minimize your out-of-pocket expenses, we encourage you to use affordable means of public transport (such as a discount bus line), or to carpool. If you plan to take the train, it is best to buy your tickets well in advance, and to travel at off-peak times.

Please save and submit all receipts pertaining to travel.

Lodging and crash space

There are several generic hotels in College Park itself. The closest to Marie Mount Hall is the Quality Inn on Route 1, just south of the campus. It is easy to walk from the Quality Inn to Marie Mount Hall. There are other hotels north of the campus on the Route 1 – but walking from these is rather unpleasant.

The registration form asks if you expect to need crash space on Friday or Saturday night. If you answer Yes for either night, a member of the MACSIM committee will contact you by email and try to arrange something. The coordinator for crash space is Michaël Gagnon, whose UMD email handle is “migagnon”.
